Tips on How to Treat a Yeast Infection in a Man,Women Issues

Although yeast infection is commonly believed to be mostly a female disease, a yeast infection man can also suffer. That is, even males can contract yeast infections.

The more common yeast infection in males is what is known as thrush. This is an oral infection where yeast invades the mucous membranes of the mouth, and can occur in both babies and adults. Those at particular risk include denture users, newborn babies, as well as people with immune deficiencies such as AIDS/HIV. This oral candidiasis or yeast infection does not prefer any particular sex, and occurs in both males and females.

Genital yeast infection, however, is not commonly associated with men. But penile yeast infections are possible, and come with the same symptoms and causes as vaginal yeast infections.

Sexual transmission is perhaps one of the more common ways of contracting a yeast infection. Candidiasis can be transmitted by direct contact, and as such a woman with an infection can infect her lover in unprotected sex. Sometimes this infection can even be passed back and forth between partners, if they are not careful about treating it. Following safe sex guidelines and being very hygienic with sexual practices can help prevent the transmission of a yeast infection, even if one partner is actively infected.

Another possible cause, although less common, is the taking of certain antibiotics. Use of antibiotics, especially prolonged use, may mess up the balance of microorganisms in the body and on the penis. The beneficial and harmless bacteria may be killed off by antibiotics, leaving the less benign yeast to take over.

Diabetics are also more susceptible to yeast infections. This is presumably because the urine contains elevated amounts of sugar, providing sustenance for yeast.

We can then move on to looking at possible yeast infection treatments. There is not much difference between the treatment for males and for females, except of course in the details of application. The same substances and medication that are prescribed for female yeast infection can be used to try and treat a male yeast infection.

For instance, yogurt and garlic are two natural substances that possess yeast-killing characteristics. Applying these topically to the infected area may help to hasten the clearing up of the yeast infection, but may not stand up to more severe infections. Stronger treatments include boric acid and potassium sorbate, but these should be used with care!

Another option is of course over the counter medication. Several good options are available, from different pharmaceutical companies. Although most of these are targeted towards women, who are more likely to develop yeast infections, they are still as effective for male infections. They are also used the same, although suppository-form medication would obviously not be able to work as intended!

When faced with a yeast infection, man and woman alike should act quickly to prevent the condition from worsening. Caught early, these yeast infections may be treated by simple and mild home remedies. This would mean that more expensive medications or potent treatments would not be needed later on.

However many men do find the chemical methods of treating a yeast infection can be quite harsh on the body, especially their skin. There are many very effective natural methods out there for treating yeast infections, which are far more gentle on the body and often more effective also.
