Just when you thought a vacation can be relaxing, the Gallup Organization reports that the majority of Americans return from vacation tired. In fact, the survey found that 54 percent of respondents reported feeling tired after coming back from vacation, with 19 percent of them saying they feel either very tired or exhausted. The Gallup survey, sponsored by Sanofi - Synthelabo Inc., identified poor planning, later bedtimes and unfamiliar or uncomfortable accommodations as some of the key reasons why people arrive home tired from their trip. The following are some tips to help you ease into a good night sleep while you are on vacation.
Don t over-extend yourself before or during vacation. Instead, start refreshed by getting several good nights of sleep before leaving. If you head off on vacation exhausted, the feeling will carry with you throughout your trip. This thought also applies to stress and worries - leave them at home - along with your cell phone or blackberry. There s no reason to worry the entire time you are on vacation - take a break from everyday stresses and you will sleep better at night.
Decide on a relaxing vacation destination. Heading off to amusement parks or other high activity locales will make you feel even more exhausted than when you started. Whereas lounging on the beach or taking a cruise can enhance your relaxation and provide a great stress reliever. Even if you head to an action-packed destination, make sure to get a good night sleep each night while on your vacation.
Bring your own pillow. This is especially true when traveling overnight by train or camping. The familiarity of your pillow will help you relax while trying to sleep. In addition, spend time winding down each day while you are on vacation. If you are active up until bedtime, you will have trouble falling asleep. Take regular naps. Even a fifteen minute power nap will leave you feeling refreshed and ready for action. You may also want to invest in a pair of earplugs and an eye mask, if noise and light keep you awake. Another good option, if available, is relaxing in a warm bath or hot tub to help promote sleep.
Eat and drink sensibly. Overeating can cause acid reflux, making it difficult to sleep. Avoiding caffeine, including chocolate, after 6 pm will help you decompress at the end of the day. Alcohol also can affect sleep. While often thought of as a sedative, alcohol may cause you your sleep to be fitful.
If you have allergies, you should know that certain antihistamines often taken for allergies or cold symptoms have ingredients that can cause sleeplessness at night and sleepiness during the day. When travelling, read the labels of any medications you might be taking and adjust your sleep times accordingly. Your doctor or pharmacist may also be able to suggest alternatives to help you sleep.
Make your vacation a relaxing one by establishing good sleeping habits before you go so you will return home feeling refreshed and rejuvinated.
